After HECK!, I asked Rip Off, if I could guest edit an issue of Rip Off Comix, The Vampiric Issue #26 was a delight! Weird and wonderful contributions were gathered. Natasha Shawver did a brilliant cover...We had gems from The Pizz, J.R. Williams, George Parsons, Mary Fleener and Carel Moiseiwitsch. It turned out to be one of their best selling issues! Soon after that I helped good 'ol George Parsons with the All Shook Up issue. Contributions and reflections of cartoony brains just coming out of the mind fog of the 1989 Earthquake.
The comix and prints were'nt paying much at first, so I had a short stint as booking agent and ad designer for Comic Relief bookstore for a short time. One of the greatest comic shops on the planet, they don't think of me as well, and I don't blame them. I arranged for a very successful book signing for (now, Academy Award nominee) Daniel Clowes, a big turn out, I might add. My friend Kryttre was there and introduced me to the head of the ink and paint department of Colossal Pictures. At the time I enjoyed the work at Comic Relief, but the pay wasn't great, and I needed more, kid and all. I faked being sick the next day in order to go to Colossal and test for the art department. I was offered the job that day as Head Inker, and never returned to the comic store. Rory the owner, a very cool guy, was very pissed, again, I don't blame him. But ya gotta do what ya gotta do. If you read this...Sorry Rory! (R.I.P. Rory!!!) The gig at Colossal was hard work but alot of fun.
Some good people in our department. Alot of real talent...Dave Fremont. One of the best cartoonist I've known!, Joe Sloan, who was the lead singer, for the infamous SF band, SPOT 1019, Eric White, a brilliant surrealist painter, just to name a very few.
Mostly it was commercial work, Coca Cola, Carls Jr., MTV...At this time Colossal was producing Liquid TV, we produced great shorts for Mark Beyer, Peter Bagge, and Charles Burns. My only "credited" work out and about from Colossal, is Drew Friedman's Uncle Louie, although I contributed to tons of other productions.
